EVEN A FROG WILL KICK THE BBC

Persian Journal

On June 27, 2004, the BBC reported on an Iranian woman who gave birth to a frog. Their story originated from the Persian paper Etemaad.

The BBC published a photo of a frog with the caption "Tests are being carried out on the frog."

This photo has since been replaced with a map of Iran due to our complaint.

The pairing of this photo and caption implies that the frog in the photo is the Iranian woman's "frog child." It also implied that tests are being carried out on this very frog. However, we discovered that the frog in the photo is not even native to Iran.

David Dickey of the American Museum of Natural History identified the frog in the BBC photo as a Chinese Gliding Frog, Polypedates dennysi, found only in southern China. He noted that students remembered seeing this species at the museum's current frog exhibition. Dickey called the
frog child story "the worst, most ridiculous example" of bad journalism he had ever seen.

Dickey recommended speaking to the world expert on Chinese frogs, Kraig Adler, Professor of Biology and Vice Provost for Life Sciences at Cornell University.
Dr. Adler told us that the frog child storis "biologically impossible."

Jump Jimmy Jump

Pitch invader angry with Figo

LISBON - The Spanish man who invaded the pitch in the final minutes of the Euro 2004 final between Portugal and Greece on Sunday said he was motivated by lingering anger over Portuguese star Luis Figo's transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000.

"I did it for fame, but with a cause. Figo is a sell-out," the 29-year-old from Barcelona who goes by the name "Jimmy Jump" said.

The man raced across the pitch at the Stadium of Light here and threw a Barcelona scarf into Figo's face before he hurled him- self against the back of the Portuguese net.

He was carried off the pitch by police and charged with public order offences.

A court in Lisbon on Monday released him without setting bail terms until a trial date is set.

The Spaniard has targeted other high-profile events before, most recently at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Figo has routinely faced protests by Barcelona fans since his $56 million transfer from Barcelona to arch-rivals Real Madrid four years ago. - Sapa-AFP

Al Jazeera

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Al-Jazeera is considering selling its shares to the public, according to a report Sunday.

Following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Arab satellite channel gained notoriety outside of the Middle East with its coverage of the most recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

State-sponsored Al-Jazeera came into prominence for its broadcasts of messages believed to come from Osama bin Laden.

"I can confirm that the board of directors has commissioned a study into the viability of turning Al-Jazeera into a private enterprise by inviting investors," Reuters quoted a spokesperson for the state-sponsored Arabic satellite channel as saying. "This could entail a flotation at some stage."

Al-Jazeera's chief news editor, Ahmed El Sheikh, told the German newspaper Handelsblatt that the Qatar-based news channel's shares would be sold on the Doha stock exchange in two to three years, according to Reuters.

El Sheikh also reportedly told the paper that Al-Jazeera was still not profitable but aimed to be so before the IPO.

Al-Jazeera was launched in 1996 and has more than 30 bureaus around the world, according to its Web site.

The channel is planning to extend its coverage, El Sheikh reportedly said, with a documentary channel in the next three to four months, and next year, an English channel and a channel aimed at children.

A spokesperson for Al-Jazeera could not be reached for comment Sunday to confirm the reports.
